Pep up the Prep
My husband's favorite look is preppy. Before we were dating, I was performing at this rock club called The Knitting Factory in what was basically a dirty basement filled with hipsters. I invited everyone I knew to come to the show so there would be a big crowd. Ira showed up in an argyle sweater vest. I hadn't seen him in a couple of years and he certainly looked like a fish out of water in his business casual attire. My dad was there and immediately gravitated to Ira--largely due to his nice Jewish boy appearance, I imagine--two peas in a pod. My dad convinced me that Ira was the ultimate catch and yada yada yada we've been married for 6.5 years and have 2 kids.
It's not uncommon for two people's styles to rub off on one another when they connect as a couple. It took me years, but I finally weeded out all of the Banana Republic from Ira's closet. A little is okay, but 75 indistinguishable button-down shirts is excessive. He takes more risks now with his dressing and he has tried to have the opposite impact on my wardrobe. He's not so into my flashy fuchsia furs and prefers when I incorporate preppy, menswear inspired pieces. He always says, "I want you to dress like a black Ferrari. At the first glance you may not notice just how luxurious and beautiful it is, but at the second glance you can't take your eyes off it. A yellow Ferrari, on the other hand, is just too obvious, too cliche, and too in-your-face. Subtle is sexier."
As a self-proclaimed expert on excessive attire I usually disregard Ira's Ferrari analogy. But, occasionally it feels nice to put on a clean, tailored outfit that doesn't involve 700 pieces. Of course I still have to do it my way. This ensemble is preppy, but the ruffles on these Storets top and pants add the perfect amount of fun flare. Melissa Lovy hoop earrings and glitter sandals keep the look youthful, while the monogramed clutch plays up the classy, all-American vibe. Lesson? Polished doesn't have to mean plain. Do it your way!
