Rule Breaker
A couple of weeks ago I was in Texas visiting my parents and attended the Multi-Cultural Alliance annual dinner with my dad where the attire was dubbed "business." Business attire in the evening in Fort Worth, Texas really means a boring black sheath dress or that trusty gray pants suit from Banana Republic circa 1998. I decided to take the opportunity to have my own quiet fashion rebellion and break 2 major rules with one white dress:
1. Growing up in the south, white before Memorial Day was practically punishable by beheading--especially when you come from generations of proper southern ladies who wore lace gloves and large, fancy hats just to go to lunch. While the "no white" rule is severely outdated in most parts of the country and world for that matter, the south is still catching up. Wearing this white dress hopefully empowered some women at the MCA dinner to say "Hey, I can do that too! I, a modern lady, should not be bound by social laws invented in the late 19th century to help the nouveau-riche fit in." (Yes, I'm kidding about the whole empowering thing, but seriously it's time to liberate the color white and incorporate it into our wardrobes before Memorial Day and after Labor Day for that matter. It's 2014.)
2. A pregnant woman in white can often bear an unfortunate resemblance to Shamu at a wedding. Normally even I, a fashion risk-taker, wouldn't be brave enough to rock a white dress with a bun in the oven. However, this particular dress has an extremely flattering swing-style that miraculously works with a large belly. Lesson? There are no fashion rules set in stone. There are always exceptions and it can never hurt to try something on to see how it works. When the cut, color, pattern (or lack there of), and texture all work together you will hear the angels sing in harmony and know you found a dress that works for you. When you're 30 weeks pregnant, you do not take this harmonious moment for granted.
