SOLE SEARCHING

“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” –Marilyn Monroe
There are certain significant moments in our lives that we remember and cling on to over the years. I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas and, like many of you reading this, wore a uniform to school every day from ages 6-18. I didn’t know I had a passion for fashion because I didn’t really know what fashion was. But then there was the moment. The moment I first set foot in the Nordstrom shoe department. I was all of 8 years old and knew I had found my calling.
When Hashem made me, he added some SOLE to my SOUL. What followed my life-altering Nordies visit? A pair of silver glitter combat boots that looked ferocious with my navy blue school jumper and left a trail of pixie dust everywhere I went. Several years later came my Bat Mitzvah with the theme “Lizzy’s Shoe-Be-Do.” And my first paycheck at 16 went to what else but a pair of Jimmy Choos! I’ve worn every amazing and awful trend in footwear fashion over the years from platform sneakers (high school) to fringed cowboy boots (college) to rainbow Rockstuds (current). So, what is it about the statement shoe that appeals to so many of us?
Any fashion-loving gal knows that the right shoe can take a look from frump to fab (and vice versa), but it goes deeper than that. A metallic stiletto or a bright pink pump does something to a woman’s attitude that even the most beautiful handbag or bauble cannot. The statement shoe has a special power to make us walk taller, both literally and figuratively. A confident woman is a force to be reckoned with. Confidence breeds success, happiness, and love for yourself and others. So next time you want to buy a pair of “impractical” heels that you think cost too much, remind yourself that confidence starts from the ground up. These are the shoes that could inspire you to: start a business, get a job promotion, cook a 5-course dinner from scratch for your family, volunteer to chair an event for your synagogue, or just smile bigger and brighter to spread love to the world around you. Did I just justify my rainbow Rockstud purchase? I think so.
