90's Accessories, They're Baaaack
In the spirit of my stroll down memory lane to a time when Victoria Beckham was only known as Posh Spice, hair salons around the world attempted and failed to mimic "The Rachel" cut, and Dylan McKay reigned as the hottest bad boy on earth, I have decided to compile a list of my top five 90's accessories that are making a comeback! And sorry, the slap bracelet did not make the cut.
1. The Choker: I recently devoted a whole post to it that you can see here. Shockingly, you can even find the plastic "tattoo" styles in stores now. Remember when trips to the mall meant loading up on these at Claire's? Buy 3 get 3 free! I even had one that was glow-in-the-dark. Gross! Thankfully, the reemergence of this trend has come with a new, sophisticated variety of options in materials like beaded leather, python, and even diamonds!
2. The Belt Bag aka The Fanny Pack: Who thought this could ever be chic? Today's waist bags are a far cry from the garish neon versions you'd see on tourists in mom-fitting khaki shorts at Disney World in '92. Although, I'm sure there's a hipster somewhere making that look cool. For the rest of us, these convenient, hands-free carriers come in rich leather styles adorned with chains or obi-belt wraps to cinch the waist. This bag is perfect for the stroller-pushing mama on-the-go!
3. The Skater Shoe: Talk about happy feet! It doesn't get comfier than this! These cool kicks have been on their way back in for a while, but now they're undoubtedly a must-have, everyday shoe regardless of your age or budget. Wearing a white velcro sneaker is the perfect way to add edge to a sleek pants suit and a perforated slip-on sneaker is an easy alternative to a sandal if you skip your pedi, but my devotion lies with the glittered grunge style. I can't turn down an opportunity to add an unexpected pop of sparkle!
4. The Flannel Shirt: While some might argue that this isn't an accessory, I strongly disagree. Tied around the waist or worn open over a dress or romper, it is a great spring layer for those chilly, transitional days and it adds an element of DGAF (google it if you don't know) casual-cool. It should be noted that you don't have to be Kurt Cobain to pull off the grungy flannel. Pair your plaid with pulled-together items like heels or a trendy hat (or tiara) if you want to avoid looking sloppy.
5. The Combat Boot: Nobody wore them better than the 90210 gals. Brenda, Kelly, and Donna teamed their Dr. Martens with floral prints and babydoll dresses, and that combo still works like a dream today. We can always use another accessory to toughen up our sweet spring frocks and these are perfect for those pre-summer days! Louis Vuitton and Valentino runways showed us that these badass boots will take us right into fall.
