Multipurpose Pants
Poolside to Professional to Party
Disclaimer: Your husband/boyfriend/passing construction worker will likely hate these. Whatevs.
I'm having a love affair with loose, printed pants as a summer essential. Because, let's face it, just because temperatures rise to sweltering degrees doesn't mean we always want to let it all hang out. It's also nice to have an alternative to shorts and dresses when that mid-week stubble catches up (no, I still haven't lasered the legs...). While these trousers are often boxed in as "beachwear," with the right styling they can be office appropriate and even be dressed up for a cocktail party. Below are some of my favorite pairs along with three ways to style these multipurpose pants.
1. Casual: For beach or pool, pair them with a rubber flipflop, bikini, and white tank for an alternative to your kaftan or cover up. For a summer BBQ, choose a solid white off-the-shoulder top, panama hat, and an espadrille. Add bold jewelry, like colorful resin bangles and tassel earrings.
2. Professional: Skin is definitely not in at the office, so it is important to stay somewhat covered on top. That said, covered doesn't have to mean completely conservative. A blouse like the one I'm wearing here makes a bold statement while still maintaining a polished tone. There are so many alternatives to the basic button down right now, so be a little adventurous! Finish the look with sleek gold jewelry (like this lariat and hoops from Melissa Lovy) and a pair of vibrant slide sandals or pumps.
3. Dressed Up: Contrast the loose pants with a top that has some sex appeal. Stick to black for a sophisticated, evening look . A lace-trimmed silk camisole or an elegant halter are perfect for gals who love to accentuate their arms. Not your favorite feature? A cold shoulder top or lace blouse will work just as well. A fancy shoe is the key ingredient to upgrade these laid back britches, so choose a metallic stiletto, or embellished evening sandal. Add some sparkle with dazzling drop earrings and a crystal cuff. Pick a solid, bold clutch in a complementary color to the pants for the final touch!
