Beyond Boho
I keep waiting for my obsession with bohemia and bohemian maxi dresses to subside, but the devotion continues. You may remember my recent post about the free-spirited maxi dress as the warm-weather vacation essential. The love affair with this bold frock need not end when the vacation does. But how does one take this tribal/hippie hybrid from the beach to the streets of New York? Or to the synagogue? Or to a classy Sunday brunch? With the right accessorizing, of course!
I just wore this Anna Sui dress to a beautiful brunch for Shasheret- a not-for-profit organization that supports women and their families facing breast cancer. While pairing this dress with tribal, beaded jewelry or a fringed bag could look boho-chic on vacay, it doesn't necessarily translate in other facets of life. Nobody wants to be the girl who looks like she's in costume--this isn't Coachella. Minimal, basic accessories would work (I'm talking to you, Kate Middleton, though I wouldn't dare propose a "Who wore it better?" contest), but as you know by now, I've never been great at showing self-restraint when it comes to accessorizing.
The trick is to incorporate pieces that contrast with the bohemian vibe of the dress. The sleek, oversized hoops bring an edgy urban element, while the embellished top-handle bag and elegant wedges add sophistication. And just like that, we go from beach to brunch. Added bonus? You don't have to shave your legs.
