Shady Lady
As a self-proclaimed expert on all-things accessories, one of the most frequent questions I receive is: “What should my staple accessory be for the season?” My answer this summer? A pair of statement sunglasses, like my new faves from Jonathan Adler. Sunglasses serve numerous purposes in the realm of style. A few that come to mind:
1. They add a glamorous mystique—think Jackie O. They also hide fatigue and lack of make up. Swipe on some lipstick and call it a day!
2. They can transform a look—a pair of John Lennon circulars adds cool flair to anything feminine, or a pair of oversized cat-eyes brings a retro vibe to a modern ensemble, making for an effortlessly chic look.
3. They provide an opportunity to express personal style, enjoy noncommittal experimentation with trends, and start a conversation.
I’m all about a good fashion statement, but nothing gets me going like functional fashion. The protection and health benefits these shady add-ons provide are far too often unaddressed. In honor of The Vision Council's fourth annual National Sunglasses Day, I want to share some eye-opening facts with you about UV protection.
Here are the basics on UV Protection:
- According to the World Health Organization, there are 3 kinds of radiation: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is absorbed by our atmosphere and not dangerous. UVB is partially blocked, but can burn our eyes and skin. UVA is not filtered and causes the most damage to our eyes and health.
- Only 31% of American adults report they always wear sunglasses when they’re outside; 27% report they never do per survey by The Vision Council.
- American adults also report experiencing trouble seeing, sunburnt eyes, irritated eyes, swollen eyes, and wrinkles from lack of eye protection in the sun.
- UV radiation is present year-round, regardless of weather.
- Dark lenses do not equate to UV protection and not all sunglasses offer UV protection. We must look for the label. Sunglasses that offer UVA/UVB protection are a nonnegotiable when considering purchasing a pair.
If you were wavering about investing in a new pair of sunnies, I can’t think of a better case to make than your health! Now shop on, guilt-free, and share your #SunglassSelfie with us on Instagram so we can peep your pair! Head to NationalSunglassesDay.com for more info!
