Vintage Adventure
As a fashion fanatic and accessories addict, the last thing I would ever think I would need is a stylist. Someone to help ME shop?! Laughable. When my friend Sabrina, who has a resume stacked with jobs in fashion and styling, told me she had just to tried this incredible styling service, Signature.Styled, and I should too, I was confused, but also intrigued. Signature.Styled pairs clients with top New York City stylists to guide the clients through the shopping experience, advise them on trends, and introduce them to the best places to shop around the city. If Sabrina could get something out of working with a personal stylist, maybe I could too. I decided to meet with the co-founder of Signature.Styled, Emilia, to learn about the process talk about how we could work together.
As Emilia and I were casually conversing over coffee, the subject of my 30th birthday came up. She asked me if I had my outfit picked out for my disco-themed bash, and suddenly the panic set it. In the midst of my party planning, I had totally dropped the ball on shopping for an outfit. With only two weeks until the party, I had to figure something out quickly, and it couldn't just be an ordinary sparkly frock--it had to be a total showstopper. Because of the 70's theme, Emilia suggested I explore some vintage options. I know very little about vintage and while I've happened upon some vintage treasures over the years, I tend to get very overwhelmed in vintage shops. Emilia set up an appointment for me with Stefany, a stylist who specializes in vintage, to find my perfect birthday outfit.
Prior to our shopping date, I spoke to Stefany about what I envisioned for my look and she encouraged me to keep and open mind and "prepare for an adventure." We met at Amarcord Vintage in Soho. When I arrived, Stefany had already perused all the racks and had a dressing room filled with options for me to try. When I saw a breathtaking gold sequined Michael Kors gown hanging on the front of the rod, I knew Stefany and I were on the same page. I was blown away that without ever having met me in person, she knew my exact body type and size. Every item fit! She also pulled several pieces I never would have looked at that I ended up loving, like a black Kenzo jumpsuit and a rust halter Gucci gown. I'm like a small child and always gravitate to the brightest or glitziest items, which causes me to miss some of the best, more subtle designs that Stefany was able to uncover.
I fell head over heels for the Kors sequins at Amarcord, but was hoping for a short dress, so our adventure continued. We stopped into Resurrection where I found a pair of Claire Deve shoulder-dusting earrings that I'm positive were on someone's lobes at Studio 54 (Perhaps Bianca or Liza? If jewels could talk!) and Ritual Vintage where I found an adorable floral dress for an upcoming vacation. At the end of the day, we went back to Amarcord for the gold sequined gown. We decided I could cut it short and use the excess fabric to make a turban, which would be disco-fabulous with the Claire Deeve earrings.
I had a phenomenal experience working with Stefany and ended up with some wonderful purchases that I never would have found by myself, including my perfect disco dress! I also discovered three incredible shops that I can't wait to visit again, though I'm not sure how well I'd do without Stefany's vintage expertise! I would absolutely recommend Signature.Styled to anyone! We can all use a bit of guidance--even the biggest fashion brats, like me!
