What's my secret?
Let's talk tights. While historically categorized as an undergarment, in recent years, hosiery has become a statement-making accessory. One of the perks of cooler weather is the addition of this legwear layer. Opaque, sheer, fishnet, patterned, lace, jeweled...the possibilities for gorgeous gams are endless.
I recently paid a visit to TipToe Boutique to test-drive a few of the hundreds of styles of tights that they carry. Minus the fluorescent rainbow pair I rocked with my ugly school uniform in middle school, I have always been leery of funky tights. I have long admired the way they look on gals with supermodel-length-legs, but was worried they would be unflattering on my petite frame. I've always stuck to basic opaque and sheer solids, which frankly doesn't cut it for a connoisseur of excessive accessories.
For my entry into trendy tights territory, I decided to start with this pair of Pretty Polly Secret Sock Tights. This was an easy transition, because I love the look of over-the-knee boots. These tights are equally as flattering as OTK boots, and they give a sexy Ode To Clueless vibe. They are also unbelievably warm, because of the extra "sock" layer. At about $25 a pair, they make a great "stocking-stuffer!"
Stay tuned for more of my adventures in the world of eccentric nylons. This is an outfit I would wear to a casual, but festive holiday party. The colors are quite literal, which was unintentional, but hilarious. Especially because I am Jewish. I topped the ensemble off with my season essential: the chic black fedora. Hot Child in the City
Unlike most New Yorkers, I actually enjoy Manhattan in the summer. It's quieter, there's less traffic, and the warm city evenings feel romantic and sexy. I don't mind a Sunday afternoon at the beach, but I prefer to see the sunset over the city skyline. A loose white dress like this one from MLM is perfect for cocktails al fresco on a humid, sticky night. I love how off-the-shoulder designs leave room for lots of glamorous jewelry. I have rekindled my 90s obsession with chokers and I love the way this gold one looks with giant earrings. Personal Style
A good friend of mine recently said to me, “I really feel like lately you’ve just come into your own style.” I took this as a huge compliment. I’ve always been a bit of a chameleon, both in style and in life. Not that I would ever categorize myself as a conformist , but I tend to take inspiration from my surroundings and then meld with them in my own way. I definitely fell into the trap of blindly following trends around me at times and wore things that I really didn’t connect with (boring Banana Republic ensembles in high school, hipster Nike dunks in college, and ill-fitting jean skirts when I was living in Jerusalem all come to mind). I think it took me a long time to really get comfortable in my own skin and develop confidence with my own sense of personal stye. I know my style will continue to evolve, but I've realized that if I feel like myself when I wear something, that’s the most important thing. Fashion should never be about "fitting in"--it's about being honest with yourself about what you love and feel good in. What message do you want to send with your style?
Growing up, I never aspired to have a career in fashion, but it has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a person who thrives on creativity and artistic expression, I love to use my clothes and accessories as a way to reflect my mood or my current inspiration. I think the reason I gravitate towards bolder styles and excessive accessories is because I feel most confident when I connect to my inner performer. I spent my formative years singing on a weekly country music show and pursued my music throughout college. I always felt most at home on stage, entertaining an audience. I loved the music, but I think I loved the performance aspect even more. I feel like in a way, I treat each outfit I create as a performance. It is such a satisfying feeling when the clothes and accessories come together in a perfect harmony.
