Sequins for Day

NewsFLASH: the sun is shining and you should be too! Sparkly attire is no longer limited to New Year’s Eve or cheesy nights at the club in Vegas.  Some of our favorite street style stars like Mira Duma, Chiara Ferragni, and Giovanna Battaglia have shown us that with the right pairings, sequins can make a spectacular daytime statement! Here are three tips for rocking sequins before dark:

1. Opt for sporty sparkles. Choose a sequined piece with casual connotations like a pair of joggers or a bomber jacket. 

2. Dress your sequins down.  Team your sequined top with mom jeans or pair a sequined pencil skirt with a plain white T shirt or even a gray sweatshirt. Don’t be afraid to complete the contrasting ensemble with a great pair of white sneakers! 

3. Keeps the accessories matte and minimal.  To avoid looking like a walking disco ball, let the glitzy garment you choose be the only item that sparkles...besides your gorgeous smile! Steer clear of metallics and shiny hardware when you choose your shoes and bag and pick delicate jewelry.

What's my secret?

Let's talk tights.  While historically categorized as an undergarment, in recent years, hosiery has become a statement-making accessory.  One of the perks of cooler weather is the addition of this  legwear layer.  Opaque, sheer, fishnet, patterned, lace, jeweled...the possibilities for gorgeous gams are endless.  

I recently paid a visit to TipToe Boutique to test-drive a few of the hundreds of styles of tights that they carry.  Minus the fluorescent rainbow pair I rocked with my ugly school uniform in middle school, I have always been leery of funky tights.  I have long admired the way they look on gals with supermodel-length-legs, but was worried they would be unflattering on my petite frame.  I've always stuck to basic opaque and sheer solids, which frankly doesn't cut it for a connoisseur of excessive accessories.  

For my entry into trendy tights territory, I decided to start with this pair of Pretty Polly Secret Sock Tights.  This was an easy transition, because I love the look of over-the-knee boots.  These tights are equally as flattering as OTK boots, and they give a sexy Ode To Clueless vibe.  They are also unbelievably warm, because of the extra "sock" layer.  At about $25 a pair, they make a great "stocking-stuffer!"

I live in sundresses during the summer and I wear them to the point that I never want to see them again come the following year.  For this reason, 99% of my summer day dresses cost less than $100, with many as low as $30.  I find most of my favorites from Zara, H&M, and Forever 21.  I get such great pleasure from taking an inexpensive dress, like this beautiful one from H&M, and accessorizing it in all sorts of ways.  My good friend, Shani, and I discovered this particular dress on one of our shopping excursions and both bought it in different colors.  We have been having the best time sending each other mirror selfies of the different ways we style it. Isn't it a blast to see how two people can conceptualize completely unique ways to wear the same dress?  Do you and your friends do the same thing?

Hot Child in the City

 Unlike most New Yorkers, I actually enjoy Manhattan in the summer. It's quieter, there's less traffic, and the warm city evenings feel romantic and sexy.  I don't mind a Sunday afternoon at the beach, but I prefer to see the sunset over the city skyline.  A loose white dress like this one from MLM is perfect for cocktails al fresco on a humid, sticky night.  I love how off-the-shoulder designs leave room for lots of glamorous jewelry. I have rekindled my 90s obsession with chokers and I love the way this gold one looks with giant earrings.  Wishing everyone a hot and sexy summer whether it's here, at the beach, or on a yacht in Capri.
