What's my secret?

Let's talk tights. While historically categorized as an undergarment, in recent years, hosiery has become a statement-making accessory. One of the perks of cooler weather is the addition of this legwear layer. Opaque, sheer, fishnet, patterned, lace, jeweled...the possibilities for gorgeous gams are endless.

I recently paid a visit to TipToe Boutique to test-drive a few of the hundreds of styles of tights that they carry. Minus the fluorescent rainbow pair I rocked with my ugly school uniform in middle school, I have always been leery of funky tights. I have long admired the way they look on gals with supermodel-length-legs, but was worried they would be unflattering on my petite frame. I've always stuck to basic opaque and sheer solids, which frankly doesn't cut it for a connoisseur of excessive accessories.

For my entry into trendy tights territory, I decided to start with this pair of Pretty Polly Secret Sock Tights. This was an easy transition, because I love the look of over-the-knee boots. These tights are equally as flattering as OTK boots, and they give a sexy Ode To Clueless vibe. They are also unbelievably warm, because of the extra "sock" layer. At about $25 a pair, they make a great "stocking-stuffer!"

Stay tuned for more of my adventures in the world of eccentric nylons. This is an outfit I would wear to a casual, but festive holiday party. The colors are quite literal, which was unintentional, but hilarious. Especially because I am Jewish. I topped the ensemble off with my season essential: the chic black fedora. HOW TO WEAR:

Let your feet do the talking by keeping the rest of your look mostly neutral. It should be noted that neutral does not have to mean boring. Gray denim and a sporty sweatshirt contrast wonderfully with these blingy boots. Cuff the jeans to show a bit of ankle.

Hooray Crochet

We've charmed in chiffon, we've lounged in linen, and we've lured in lace, but this summer, it's time to say "Yes WAY!" to crochet. Hailing from the counterculture of the late 60's and holding strong into the 70's, this granny-chic fabric is a groovy breath of fresh air in a sea of uptight, "clean line" styles. I acknowledge that a full-crochet rainbow dress may be too aggressive for some, but there are plenty of more subtle options (such as a white dress with crochet trim or a crochet vest to be worn over a button down blouse or shirtdress) that you can choose. You can avoid looking like a member of the That 70's Show cast by pairing these kitschy knitted pieces with modern accessories (like a moto-inspired cross-body bag)...or embrace the excessively retro movement and commit to a Jackie Burkhart moment with a boho bag and platforms. Far Out

Like most New Yorkers, I am ready to come out of a winter hibernation filled with binge watching and binge eating to rediscover all the places I love in this city. A wonderful way to welcome warmer days is to head downtown for an afternoon in SoHo. I love the European feel of the cobblestone on Wooster Street.

In case you couldn't tell, I now think I am a cast member of That 70's Show and have zero plans to dress in any way that could not be described as "groovy." I am grateful for the return of the chunky-heeled platform, because these streets aren't exactly stiletto-friendly. A turtleneck is a great tool for layering on a breezy spring day that doesn't quite call for a jacket. I love the way a black or white turtleneck looks under almost anything from a chambray shirt to a slip dress or as seen here, with a retro crochet vest. Neon Navajo

I never really got into the whole music festival scene and now that I have kids, that ship has really sailed. In any case, I love to dream up tribal-inspired outfits that I would wear to Coachella... and then I wear them to D'agostino to buy apple juice boxes.

I nearly passed out the first time I saw this neon, hand-embroidered shearling Pia Pauro vest. Can you say excessive? After repeatedly ogling it at my office at Showroom Seven, I finally had to make it mine. You may or may not remember my recent post on the embroidered vest as a seasonal must-have. A statement vest is a great way to amp up a casual, everyday look, like this denim-on-denim ensemble. Vests are also great to layer under or over coats for those extra cold winter days.

I accessorized with a hand-painted vintage leather purse that I found at a swap meet in Chelsea my junior year of college. The purse really brings out the tribal vibe of the vest. While I love "theme" dressing, mixing vintage pieces with modern ones is a good way to keep a look fresh. As if the vest weren't bright enough, I added a neon Erickson Beamon necklace...a dash of J. Lo in the Joni Mitchell, you know?

As I was shooting these photos, a woman asked if I chose the location because of the architecture. I told her yes and she asked if I knew the history of the building. Turns out the backdrop for this Navajo-inspired post was a building that formerly housed thousands of Native Americans in the early 1900s. Wowsers.
